Faculty of Foreign Languages has four teaching institutes: the English Department, the Japanese Department, the German Department, and the College Foreign Language Division. The Faculty has one National Quality Course ("College English") and three Zhejiang Quality Courses ("Advanced English", "Comprehensive English", "Japanese", "English Teaching Methods”). Our teachers have edited 28 teaching materials, 5 of which are listed in the 11th and 12th Five-year National Planning Materials. The Faculty actively explores teaching reform, adopts the talent training mode of "platform + module", and focuses on highlighting professional characteristics and innovating teaching methods. The English majors have received excellent grades in the evaluation of the first batch of undergraduate majors by the Ministry of Education. Our passing rates of TEM 4 and TEM 8 for English majors, national exams for Japanese and German majors, and CET 4 and CET 6 for college English are among the top in Zhejiang Province.
There are seven research institutes in the Faculty, including the Institute of Theoretical Linguistics, the Institute of Applied Linguistics, the Institute of English Literature, the Institute of Maritime Literature and Culture, the Institute of Translation, the Institute of Japanese Studies, and the Institute of European Languages and Cultures. The Faculty has strong scientific research capacity and is a key research base of "Foreign Language and Literature" in the humanities and social sciences in Zhejiang Province; it has established the "Research Center for Foreign Languages and Cultures and the Strategy of International Development Strategy of Ningbo" in cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. In addition, the Faculty also runs the Zhejiang Academy of Translation.
There are currently more than 1,300 full-time students, including more than 300 graduate students and over 1,000 undergraduate students. Six students have been selected as volunteers for the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and seven students for the Guangzhou Asian Games. In recent years, the percentage of students admitted to graduate school has been increasing, and many students are admitted to famous universities at home and abroad annually. The employment rate of our graduates (including bachelor's and master's degrees) is among the highest in the province. The Faculty attaches great importance to the improvement of students' ideological, moral and cultural qualities, and actively organizes activities such as foreign language drama performances, English speech and debate competitions, foreign language mini newspaper clubs, and foreign language corners to create a characteristic campus cultural atmosphere for students. The Faculty of Foreign Languages' motto is: "Dexin, Duya".
Based on the tenet of "based in Ningbo, serving the local community and exploring the world", the Faculty adheres to the principle of giving equal emphasis to both academic research and social benefits, relying on the advantages of foreign language disciplines, and strives to serve the local foreign-related economic and cultural construction, providing foreign language training and translation services for governments and enterprises of different levels. The foreign language version of the Ningbo government portal built by the foreign language project team of Ningbo University has won the first place in the foreign language version of the government portal for eight years in a row in the list of the nation's provincial capitals and cities separately listed in the plan, and in the announcement issued by the Information Office of the State Council in 2012, the portal was ranked as "the most influential government website in China. Foreign Language Version". The Faculty of Foreign Languages is constantly strengthening its external ties and exchanges, and has established cooperation relationships with many universities abroad and has implemented exchange programs in Delaware State University, Purdue University, Kristian University in Sweden, Hiroshima University, Utsunomiya University, Iwate University and other universities.
